Because He was Starving

Because He was Starving

Maithri Panagoda, Australia
2021-January

He cannot look out, but imagines
birds dancing in the sky

He cannot hear but remembers
Bethovan’s 9th
being played in the Opera House

Stares blankly at the empty ceiling
surrounded by bare walls
twenty hours a day

Colder than Antarctica
hotter than Sahara

Impersonal glances
hatred palpable
humanity a trick
almost forgotten

Deprived of freedom
evidently to protect the civilised society
that pushed him to the point of stealing
from the civilised society
which could not feed him for four days

A wise jail mate said to him
his crime was getting caught
everyone out there steals

May be not sausage and cheese
